Can anyone recommend a good site statistics tracker
(preferably free!).
I'm currently using the free version of sitemeter, but I'm
not
convinced of its accuracy as it seems to miss visits
occasionally.
Thanks
Rob

it installs on your server so you have to have your own hosting.
There is also Google Analytics....

I don't trust Sitemeter, either. Then again, after a known spike in traffic over the past few days, I'm not sure I trust my host's stats package, also.
Sitemeter tells me there are literally like 800 or so *less* visitors/day than my 1and1 stats package tells me...that's a HUGE discrepancy. However, over the past few days, I've received a lot more traffic from
photoblogs.org, which Sitemeter has reflected, but 1and1 has barely registered a blip on (ie. it's barely shown a spike at all). So I'm not sure what to believe anymore. I just installed Google Analytics to see what I get there...I'll start seeing the results in a day or two.
It's not so much that I care if I have a ton of visitors, but I do care if my stats are accurate for other purposes. It's frustrating!

You should definitely try Google Analytics... It may be a
little bit
too heavy-duty for some people, but it's free and it's world
class.
(Google bought the popular Urchin stats company and turned
it into
this.) I use this for Photoblogs.org, etc.
http://www.google.co
m/analytics/
There's also Awstats... if you have access to your web log
files (and
you're a bit of a tech-geek), you can install it on your
server.
http://awstats.source
forge.net/
One quick thing, though, there's a big difference between
stats
software (like Awstats) that checks your server's log files
and a
service like Google Analytics. Google Analytics uses
Javascript to
track real web browser hits in real-time... and Awstats
looks at all
the info from your server logs. Server logs will show hits
from all
kinds of crazy spam bots and things, so they can actually be
wildly
out of sync with what "real" users are doing on
your site.
Since spam-bot software generally doesn't do anything with
Javascript,
Google Analytics (or any similar service) will *ignore*
these spam
bots whereas something like Awstats will still show you all
that fake
traffic.
Something to think about.

Try www.statcounter.com
. Works good and free.
I'm using this for a handful of projects - it works quite well and is
indeed free. It also integrates a sweet little Google Maps mashup that
allows you to visually situate your viewers throughout the world.
Fun stuff.
Best,
AA

I like google's stats too, it just takes a bit of time to
find the
things that are relevant to you. One thing google's stats
don't do,
from what I've seen, is allow you to 'tag' individual files
and get
reports on them, but that's not something that's too
important for a
photoblog I don't think, you can get basic information on
URLs and
activity.

It's possible their definitions of what a 'visitor' is
varies between
the two packages.
