Hi Tom,
I really like this photo. First of all, don't come to any
conclusions
about the voting results on Weekly Shot. I think the truly
outstanding
photos do usually make it to the featured page, but many
great photos
don't.
Okay, what I like here is the echoed red throughout; the
hair, the
tinted glasses, and - of course - the rust. The selective
and narrow
dof is great, the cropping is pleasing, and the general
design of the
frame really makes sense.
As for the content, I also think it works well. The hole is
intriguing
and well placed, and the general setting makes me curious.
If I were playing with this in the darkroom or Photoshop, I
guess I'd
see what happened if I went a bit heavier on the contrast,
burned in
the hole a bit more, and perhaps dialed in a few more points
of red.
But, truly, you've offered up an image that stands very well
as is.

Hi Tom,
You have put up a pic that to be honest is fine as it is, I
don't think
that making changes to it would do anything to improve it. I
like the
narrow depth of field and the nature of the rust and flaking
paint
reminds me of Bark from a sliver birch tree. The only thing
that
niggles me( and only a little bit) is the choice of eyeware
of the
person, perhaps if you knew them you may have tried it with
and without
them but it's a matter of personal taste.
A well seen shot, but I think the subject matter just comes
down to
personal taste.
Cheers, Dave.

Thanks for your responses, Matt and Dave. ; I'm glad to hear the image is better than weeklyshot said, but I'm a little bummed to have stalled out the critique group with a photo that's no fun to tear apart (not literally, of course).  Perhaps I'll be looking for something in my archives that didn't make it to my blog...should we try and restart this one?  Call it "Photo of the Half Week of December 6th"?

I'm supprised that nobody else has commented yet one way or
another,
perhaps it's been a busy week fror most people. I think if
you don't
get ant more responses by tomorrow then you could put up
another if you
wish, and I'll have a look at that also.

I was going to suggest that seeing as the xmas hols are
coming up, that
perhaps we have a hiatus during xmas week then start again
on say the
2nd Jan07, what does everyone think?
I think a short break would be welcome seeing as most of us
are rushed
off our feet this time of year what with shopping, wrapping
and family
visits etc.

Regards, Dave.

I agree with the positive things Tom has stated. Maybe burn
the edges a
little to keep my eyes from wandering off after examining
the white space
and then looking around the photo.

A thousand apologies. I should have done my critique
earlier, but was
waiting until I had more time to write a thoughtful
response. I didn't want
to rush through it. So I'll just make the time to do it now,
but I should
have made the time earlier. Sorry.

I loved this image when I first saw it in Weeklyshots. I
think the ratings
are the luck of the draw. Ratings certainly don't have much
to do with the
quality of the photo, but more to do with who is rating,
what else has been
posted, how quickly the rater wants to get their own shot
posted, and how
badly they want their own featured!

I really like how the tones all work together, and that the
hair color and
rust are the same shades. There is just one tiny niggle in
this shot, IMO.
The point of focus isn't where I would have put it. The
focus seems to be on
that top line of peeling paint, and for me, I don't think
that is the
subject of the photo and so shouldn't receive the focus. I
would have
focused on either the bottom edge of the hole or on the girl
herself. Though
the girls glasses and eye does seem fairly sharp, so it
certainly isn't a
big flaw or anything.

Because of the angle I may have opened the aperture more to
bring the girl
and the hole into focus. I don't know if that would have
made a big
difference to the impact of this shot though. The narrow DOF
gives the image
a sense of mystery. Just who is this girl, and what is she
trying to see? My
imagination wanders thinking of spies and
espionage......perhaps I've been
watching too much TV lately!

I like the shot, and don't think there's much to improve it.
I like how
you've framed it too.

Cheers,
Roberta
