Hi Everybody - and thanks for the comments.

Paul Fusco, a Magnum photographer once told me to be sure
all my
photographs elicit some kind of emotion. Be it good or bad,
angry,
sad, lighthearted or serious. But make sure there is
something that
will affect the viewer.

This shot was part of a larger series, one that included his
sister
bringing this note from his future wife to him, one showing
the detail
of the wax seal and beautiful calligraphy, him almost
trembling as he
opened it, this image, a close-up of him reading it, and
then a final
image of him crying. All six are going into the wedding
album, of
course.

I was trying to emulate the feel of 3200 speed Tri-X, which
is never
easy for a digital capture. I am still working on it.

I pass the torch to Roberta.

Hi there;

That is good advice about eliciting a response in the
viewer, and it's
something that I strive to achieve in many of my images as
well. Don't know
how success I am on that, but I do try. And I am a firm
believer that it
doesn't always have to be a good reaction. The world's not
all roses and ice
cream.

Anyhow, I have to bow out of the weekly critiques for
awhile. I'm going to
be away for awhile next week and have a couple big projects
I'm working on
right now. I don't know how much time I'll have available
for the next few
months. So I'd like to pass the torch to John Kobeck at
http://www.humangraffi
ti.com/. John could you post a link to an image you'd
like critiqued on Sunday - start a new thread with the
subject Photo of the
Week April 1st.

Cheers,
Roberta

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to reply this week. The
usual
business.

But I think Eric brings up a good point here about context.
The
photoblog world doesn't always allow us to put pictures in
the context
they were meant to be seen. Also, in the case of wedding
photography,
we don't know the stories behind the pictures. So the
"emotion"
depends on that context as well. This picture was taken with
a
particular audience and story in mind. That changes the
emotional
resonance.

As a side note, I have an (almost former) client called
Tabblo. I
normally don't bother talking about things like this, but
they have an
interesting way to share photos where you can give them more
context.
You can see one I did here: ht
tp://www.tabblo.com/studio/stories/view/188760/.
There is a very different feeling from this than when I took
the same
pictures and put them on my photoblog on individual pages.
