| Subject suggestions for ruby talk on
April 19th? |

Greetings All,
It looks like I will be giving a ruby talk on April 19th. I
wanted to
ask the group for suggestions on topics that might be of
interest.
I know we discussed some topics in the first meeting, and
I'm sure
there was more discussion in the second meeting that I
couldn't make.
I'm fairly flexible and if there is something you'd like to
hear about
- I'd be willing to see how well I could present it: so
speak up! (I
can say this now that testing is out of the way ;)
That said, David suggested and CK seemed interested in how
easy it is
to interface ruby with other libraries and languages (which
I'm
restricting to C here). This translates into some minor
ruby-inline
usage and perhaps some of the ruby C API. I think this is
fantastic
stuff to talk about, but I'm not sure how useful to most of
the group.
Some other possibilities off the top of my head include:
- ruby in science, how does it fare with some real heavy
lifting and
why it's useful.
- more technical numerical ruby "howto" and use
cases.
- my ruby usage cycle (more of day in the life on how I use
ruby,
some ruby-isms, and how it helps my work. kind of a newbie
view)
- presenting Classifier (a ruby extension that I was sorta
involved
with on the fringe, it's cool - but currently kind of broken
- so this
might force me to go fix it).
There are other thoughts I had, but they are failing me
right now. In
any case, it's not a complete list (there is a list of 5
topics above,
to be clear)
If you prefer one of these, pipe up on the list. If you
have another
idea - please suggest it. Otherwise, I'll probably blend
the
ruby-with-C ideas and some science computing use cases as
the talk.
Cheers,
Cameron

As a former FORTRANista I'd be interested in this.

Sure -- I'm always interested in what people are working
on.

I would like a session on Rails, if possible. Need to know
what it
can and can not do.

I suspect you are not alone. I believe there are several
people
interested in rails.
However, I'm probably not the person for a rails demo. I
like ruby,
and I like to point out alternatives to rails. I'm not
saying there
is anything wrong with rails. I've dabbled with it in the
past, and
have a couple projects in mind that will probably use it -
but I like
being a bit of the anti-hype.
Anyhow, I still appreciate your input Andrew. For future
reference, I
also believe one of the next couple of meetings should be
hardcore
rails centric. (after which, perhaps I'll volunteer to
exhibit
something like camping ;)

I had to leave early to catch a ride, but I was concerned
that we
didn't spend time on networking after the first
presentation. Perhaps
not for this meeting, but for future ones, I'd like to urge
that we
set time aside to form into groups, ideally to look at/play
with code.
It would be great if we could split time between group work
and one
presentation per meeting. I see a need for both. But maybe
this was
discussed after I left .
