For what it's worth, I downloaded perl-5.8.8 from CPAN and
built it
successfully without any modification of the source (only
failed 1
test). Unfortunately, figuring out the offending patch (or
whatever
it is) is beyond the scope of my abilities (thusfar,
anyway). :(
