Excuse the new thread but Alexander replied to a previous
post and it didn't
add to the thread (for me in Nabble) and the problem appears
intermittent so
for both reasons I would like to document the behaviour for
the record in a
new thread.

Setup was Plone 2 on WinXp x64
Initially access to port 8080 unavailable.
Edit plone.conf and set to 8090.
Plone runs fine.
Runs fine for two days
Day three View Site brings up a blank page, Plone icon in
address bar and no
error message.
Unistall Plone 2

Install Plone 3

Problem the same and persists with various other port
numbers being tried
8080, 9090, 8090, 8095.
(a) Unable to get ZMI from Plone Controller which ever port
selected says
Firefox can't
establish a connection to the server at localhost:8090 [or
whatever]
(b) No error but blank (Plone white) screen on http://localhost/ but Plone
icon showing in address bar
(c) Same error on runzope.bat each time
C:Program Files (x86)Plone 3Databin>"C:Program
Files (x86)Plone
3Pythonp
ython.exe" "C:Program Files (x86)Plone

permission to bind to the
por
t which the server is trying to use or the port may already
be in use by

application. (Permission denied)

I have shut down and restarted two or three times with
pauses in between.
Now without further tinkering Plone is running fine on port
8095 but still
"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
localhost:8095". Oh
the consistently of computing! I will continue with Plone 3
and wait and see
if it disappears like Plone 2 before it! I think I noticed
that Plone
Controller said Plone was running when I opened it the time
it was
successful and I didn't hit the start button. On previous
attempts with the
controller it said it was stopped as the PC dialogue came
up.

Each time I used runzope.bat (and got the above error) I had
stopped it
previously with Plone Controller and it had said Plone was
stopped.

This post might provide a reference for someone else in the
future if they
have the same experience. For the moment I'm keeping my
fingers crossed.
Happy to conduct test etc. if it's helpful and anyone can
direct me what I
should do.

Regards

Chris

Today Plone is running fine still. When the Plone Controller
starts it says
Plone is running but today there is a change. Clicking the
ZMI button
actually works and doesn't yield the error message of the
past week. I'm
using port 8095 as per yesterday. I think something must be
happening on
rebooting windows to account for these changes.

I've lost Plone again!

In the morning I was working on my site (localhost) I closed
the tab in
Firefox and stopped Plone from Plone Controller. Worked away
through the day
on my day job. About eight hours later (no reboot/restart) I
opened up Plone
Controller and started Plone then hit View and the tab
opened. A blank page
and likewise the ZMI button that worked fine this morning
just gives an
error. I have installed nothing in the interim. I have used
only MS Office
and Open Office apps plus Thunderbird and IE.

I shutdown and then rebooted but just the same behaviour.

I edited plone.conf and changed the port from 8095 to 8096
saved and
shutdown.

Rebooted and still the same behaviour.

I stopped Plone with Plone Controller and then ran
runzope.bat from the
command line. Familiar error message.

  File "C:Program Files (x86)Plone
3ZopelibpythonZope2Startup__init__.py
", line 229, in setupServers
    raise ZConfig.ConfigurationError(socket_err
ZConfig.ConfigurationError: There was a problem starting a

t which the server is trying to use or the port may already
be in use by

On my network I am using the same router gateway as I used
before when I had
Plone running OK my WinXP (32 bit machine). So nothing has
changed just
running this very annoying Win x64 OS. I think it must be
linked to that.

I'm unable to work on Plone at all so I would greatly
appreciate some help.

10 hours after the last post I start my PC and login then
start Plone
Controller it says Plone is running (just as it did last
night) and click
View and up comes the site.

Last night after three reboots and hitting refresh etc.
Plone was a blank
page. This morning with nothing other than being shut down
for 10 hours its'
working again. There must be something holding onto the port
for a period
then timing out. I think that the previous execution of
Plone holds the port
even after it has been stopped and then it stops Plone
running again. After
a set period of time it is removed. Can this be something
about the 32 bit
and 64 bit stuff on Winx64. Even with other apps registered
as default
(Firefox, Mozilla etc.) MS apps get fired up every now and
then its far from
working correctly. It must be such a quirk happening here on
the ZopeDB
port.

How can I stop Plone and ZODB from the command line?

Plone is running as a service, the start/stop button starts
and stops
the service. Go look at the Windows Control Panel for
services and
another way to start/stop it.

If you want to do it from the command line:

net stop <service name>
net start <service name>

Can't remember what the service name is off the top of my
head.

The problem persists. Nearly every time a restart will bring
Plone back but I
haven't found a non restart method of resurrecting Plone. It
appears to be
mostly (but not always) when the desktop has been running
for a while and
Plone has not been. Changing port numbers has appeared to
work but I'm not
sure this is related but more coincidence. I have moved
nomadically through
a whole bunch of port numbers but the behaviour is the same
on each. I have
no doubt it's WinXP Pro 64s problem but it would be good to
get to the
bottom of it. I have tried stopping and starting the service
using the
control panel app Services. I feel it's worth documenting in
case it is
going to cause others hassle.

Documentation of behaviour of intermittent operation with
Plone 3 install on
Win x64

I don't think this is Plone 3 but a Win XP64 issue. I did
see the same
behaviour in Plone 2 and that is why I installed Plone 3

Working mode 1:
When Plone Controller (PlCon) is run it opens and says Plone
is running.
The start button does not need to be used.
View button from PlCon opens tab in Firefox (default
browser) and Plone site
is there.
ZMI clicked in PlCon yields a Firefox tab with an error:
Firefox can't
establish a connection to the server at localhost:8090 [or
whatever]

Working mode 2:
As per mode1 but the ZMI button in PlCon works and there is
a three pane
window of the ZMI

Not working mode 1:
On opening Plone Controller the dialogue says Plone is
stopped.
Clicking Start says Plone has started.
Clicking View brings up a blank page in white but with Plone
icon in the
address bar before http:\localhost
ZMI gives the error as per working mode 1
Left open PlCon times out after a few minutes and says Plone
is stopped.
Refresh of localhost in Firefox still gives Plone icon and
blank page
Run runzope.bat from command line gives:

C:Program Files (x86)Plone 3Databin>"C:Program
Files (x86)Plone
