disable discussion for whole site

Hello,
I want to completely disable all discussions on my Plone
site.
Is there a way to do this for the whole site, or per
ArchType, etc?

I am converting an existing Product to use Plone 2.1, and am
using 
ArcheTypes to define the objects of my Product.

Per type, yes. YOu do that in ZMI -> portal_types ->
<any type>

Look for the 'allow discussion' flag.

This value determines the 'default' in the Plone UI.
