Thread: Plone 3.0 upgrade in Windows

Plone 3.0 upgrade in Windows

I am currently trying to upgrade a Plone 2.5.3 install to
Plone 3.0 on a
Windows box.

I have read the Plone upgrade guide
(h
ttp://plone.org/documentation/manual/upgrade-guide) and
specifically the
section for 2.5.3 to 3.0 which basically refers to the
general procedure in
said upgrade guide. However, it seems to me that these
procedures are
mostly applicable to a Linux install.

I have read other forum posts that seem to imply that the
Windows installer
should "take care of things for you," but I'm not
exactly sure what that
means. I downloaded the 3.0 Windows executable and tried to
install over my
2.5.3 version, but things weren't happy afterwards.
Specifically, I wasn't
able to access my Plone root from the ZMI root anymore (it
said it was
broken) to get to portal_migrations per the upgrade guide.
Is there
something else I have to do to get the Windows installer to
"take care of
things" for me? Any guidance would be most
appreciated, thanks!

In general Plone does not like to be "installed
over" the previous version,
unlike many Windows programs.

Better practice is to create a new Plone directory, say
/Plone3. Next,
follow the steps in section 3, General Procedure, by copying
in your Data.fs
and any Products you've added, then running the migration
tool after you've
fired up your new Plone.

One huge advantage of this method is that your old Plone is
still intact and
you can retreat to it if you encounter problems with the
upgrade. Take care
to use different ports in plone.conf (I like to increment
them each by one)
if you decide to start both old and new Plone at the same
time.

Hello,

In my case, I renamed up my Plone 2.5 folder "plone
2" to "plone
2_backup", and then did a fresh install of Plone 3.0
into the same
machine. Plone
3.0 also installs into the folder name "plone 2."
Plone 3.0 runs fine
by itself, but I
need to migrate all of the user information and contents
from my
previous version of plone.

So, I took my Data.fs ONLY from my old, renamed plone folder
and
overwrote the Data.fs file in my new plone 3 installation
inside the
"plone 2" folder with it. After doing so, I
started plone, but I was
not able to
log into the Zope Management Interface with either my old or
newly set
login/password information. I also
could not logon with the "emergency" user I tried
making.

I was hoping I could logon, not see a "broken"
plone item, and then
go through the migration process.

Any ideas on what I could do?

Thanks
