There is one important distinction you have to know about,
in order to
understand the behavior.

On the one side we have Plone the application which has a
user interface
like all the management screens you see. On the other side
we have
content that is managed by Plone.

While we use Gettext-based translation files to
internationalize the UI
of Plone itself, this approach is not suited for translating
any actual
content. If you want to have multilingual content in your
sites as well,
you should look at LinguaPlone (http://plone.or
g/products/linguaplone)
which is the commonly used add-on product to manage this
kind of content.

By now you might already have guessed that the tabs show the
same titles
as the navigation portlet. The events and news smart folders
are some
initial content we create in a standard Plone installation,
just like
the front-page itself. Consequently we do not use the
Gettext-translation files to i18n-ize these.

Hope that helps,
Hanno

P.S. Please ask your questions on the i18n-mailing list, so
others have
a chance to answer those as well as to profit from the
answers
