Hi,

I have a couple of general questions about best practices related to integrating Plone with RDBMSs.

Background: We are developing a web-based database with Plone as the front end to a MySQL database. We are currently in the prototyping phase and have been using page templates along with ZSQL Methods and some python scripts. We are also using stored procedures in MySQL. For the most part all of this has been working quite well, however, there is some functionality we are working on now where the page templates/ZSQL methods model seems limiting.

Questions:

1) From what I have read and from postings on this list it does seem that the page template/ZSQL method model is the default when integrating Plone/Zope with RDBMSs. However, I know that some people have successfully used Archetypes-based products, such as Plone Form Gen, with RDBMSs. So, the question here is: in what cases are each of these models applicable—i.e. what are the use cases best served by each model?
2) Is there a standard way of implementing dynamic select lists, where one select list is populated dynamically based on choices from a previous list? We have been using javascript to do this, but it’s getting very complicated and I am hoping there is a more elegant solution.
3) Tabular Views: Is there a Plone way to expand/collapse table columns? The idea here is to group various columns and then allow the user to click on a +/- button which will activate the action.

Thanks,
Dev
