Hello,
I am running a Palm TX and a Windows XP Pro desktop.
I have successfully downloaded and viewed books from
Gutenberg in the
Plucker format.
When I try to convert a local text file to Plucker format,
the Palm does not
see it.
In Windows Explorer I select the file we will call
"mybook.txt" which I have
converted using Word from "mybook.doc". I right
click on the file and select
the "Convert to Plucker" option. A window that
looks like a series of DOS
commands pops up and I get a file named
"mybook.txt.pdb". I then take the
new file and drag it into the quick install window for the
expansion card. I
then do a hot sync. The hot sync manager shows the file
being transferred.
The Plucker reader does not see the file. It sees the other
books, but not
this one.
What am I missing?
Thanks!
Bob

Are you putting it into the right directory on the card? One
of the
directories Plucker expects to see documents within? Those
currently
are:
/Palm/Programs/Plucker
/Palm/Ebooks
/Palm/Launcher

David,
Thank you for your quick response.
The files are landing in the launcher subdirectory.
Upon further experimentation I have discovered that files I
downloaded from
Gutenberg as text files (as opposed to rtf or doc files)
convert properly
and work as they should.
The files that are not working properly are those converted
from rtf or doc
files. Therefore it would seem that there is something wrong
in one of the
settings I am using to make the conversion. What settings
should I use when
I save the file to txt to make them compatible?
Thanks!
Bob

If you don't have a card reader, look at PInstall from

It's a freeware replacement for the Palm Install Tool and
Quick

Hotsync

And it
doesn't care about Hotsync ID. It simply sends selected
files out the
selected port to the connected device. I can install to RAM
or to a
specified directory on a card.

PG doesn't offer RTF or doc files, so I'm not sure how you
are getting
those. I grabbed the zipped HTML, which converts readily.

Since you run Windows, take a look at Rafael Setzer's PDA
Converter:
http://www.jakewalk.de/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=MySoftw
are.PdaConverter
PDA Converter is a GUI shell for the Plucker parser that
does the
conversion. IT provides a friendly way to specify the
desired
options, then calls the Plucker parser as a background task
to convert
the file(s).

Dennis and David,
The files I am trying to convert come from Baen Books free
library.
They are available for download in several format. I have
previously
downloaded them in rtf and doc format for the laptop and now
want to convert
them to the Plucker for the Palm TX. I do have a card reader
and can copy
the files directly to the expansion card.
Baen offers many of its books in the "Palm" prc
format. I downloaded one to
try it. The Palm software happily treated it like it was
supposed to, but
when we read it on the Palm, it included html coding on
every page.
Since the Gutenberg books downloaded in Palm format and the
Gutenberg books
converted with the Plucker software to Plucker format work
properly and the
Baen books don't, it would seem to me that the issue is in
the conversion
and not the viewer and transfer software.
Since my original post, I have tried having Word save the
files as MS DOS
and Unicode text files. Neither of these options seemed to
work.
I do not have Perl, so the demoronizer program is not an
option.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Bob

For the Baen books, I download the html files. I then tell
the Plucker
desktop application where the files live. It then plucks
the files as if
they are a website.
Plucker settings
Starting Page
Click local file and enter the filename
file://C:databooksdestiny 671578723.htm
Limits tab
Set Maximum Depth to 30
Hope this helps.

I have the *complete* Baen Free Library in Plucker format.
(The stuff
on the web site, and the stuff issued on bound in CDs in
various
hardcovers. ISO images and Zip files of the CDs may be
found at
http://baencd.the
fifthimperium.com/ )

Grab the HTML, and convert directly. Don't start with Doc
or RTF.
Download the "HTML format Zip" selection. Unzip
the archive to a
directory. I've had best luck pointing Plucker at the
<whatever>_toc.html file as the starting point.
I find PDA Converter, mentioned in my previous post, a
tremendous ease
of the process. I use high compression, full color, and
full size
images linked to a thumbnail. I also change the file name
and Plucker
display name to something meaningful. My naming convention
is
Author's initials, series number, title, so the Eric
Flint/David Drake
"Belisarius" series has titles like
EF-DD B1 An Oblique Approach
EF-DD B2 In the Heart of Darkness
<etc>
which lets me sort books by author, then by order in series
in
Plucker's Library list.

The PRC format is a MobiPocket book. Mobi essentially uses
an
encapsulated subset of HTML as the markup language. The
Mobi software
is freeware these days, but the Palm OS viewer does have a
quirk or
two. Go here if interested:

Perl is available in a free, open source version form
ActiveState, at
http://preview.tinyu
rl.com/v6epo
but you don't need it for what you are doing.

See above. Plucker is an offline HTML viewer for Palm OS.
Start with
HTML content.
