Dear Dennis,

Your comments plus others in the thread finally got me to really go where it helped.

I don't need the creator (I'm running xP so should be able to do it if I figure out where to grab what software to install but all I want to do is #$ Read the books. And I finally got the pdb from Gutenberg I wanted to start with and installed it and it fit and I am reading it! GOOD

Many thanks to all for good info!

Dear Dennis,

I got the html files from project Gutenberg so they're probably not
converted.
And I currently don't have (?) ability to convert? (Not sure...just
installed plucker. Thurs) When I go to open the html files, it offers now
to open using iSiloX converter...? is this the plucker converter?

On my computer where I have the palm files there is no programs subdir in
the root. or under the
name. I did install Plucker using quick install and I can open it but the
only doc that's in the library is the userguide. Side note: I presume that
when I ultimately (God willing) get files in the library I'll be able to
change their category from Undefined to something else? I just tried
changing the user guide from Unfiled to Books (one I defined) but it didn't
change as far as I can see. I9;ll play with it a bit.

I'll go back to the plucker web pages and see about the plucker desktop to
do conversions.
sorry to bug ya.

Thanks for the help too via interesting questions to sayt he least!

Chris:

You can download Plucker versions of the documents from project Gutenberg.
Plucker is listed among the 'Formats available for downloading' I get them that
way all the time. Just click on 'Plucker' instead of 'HTML'.

Nope. They aren't. PG offers plain text and HTML. (And as Chris
YHawks mentions, they offer pre-converted Plucker files, which they
create on the fly when you select that.)

No, it isn't. iSilo is a competing product that does things similar
to Plucker. Most folks will use one or the other, but Plucker won't
understand an iSilo file, and vice versa. I have iSiloX Desktop
installed for one purpose: I use it to generate iSilo versions of True
type fonts, which I can then convert on the PDA for use in other
programs. For actually reading HTML on my PDA, I use Plucker.

Two more things:

First, forget about the desktop. Where the files live on it is
irrelevant for what you want to do. What you will be concerned with
is where to place them on the card in your PDA so Plucker can find
them. You have three choices: /Palm/Ebooks, /Palm/Launcher, and
/Palm/Programs/Plucker. I prefer /Palm/Programs/Plucker, but any of
the three will work. I recommend against using /Palm/Launcher because
too many other things also expect stuff to be there, and keeping
straight what belongs to what is a pain. The only thing in
/Palm/Programs/Plucker is Plucker documents...

Second, if you haven't, make sure you installed syszlib.prc (included
with the Plucker viewer) on your PDA. Zlib lets Plucker view
documents created with the "high-compression" option. It's a shared
library, and must live in RAM. It can't be on a card. The Plucker
viewer itself *can* be run from a card, and you can drop it in
/Palm/Launcher to save RAM.

What sort of desktop machine are you using, and what OS?

You'll need the Plucker Desktop installed to do conversions from raw
HTML to Plucker format. The desktop includes the Plucker parser that
actually does the conversions. If you run Windows, I can recommend a
freeware utility you might like to aid the process.

Good plan.

> sorry to bug ya.

No apology required. I like helping folks to use Plucker.

Have to determine where you are now before I can tell you where to go.

The only issue with that is that the last time I looked, the Plucker
versions created by PG didn't include illustrations on books that had
them. No surprise, given the number of possible options in
resolution (lo-res vs hi-res), color support, and image size. I roll
my own Plucker versions because I want embedded illos in full color.

If you don't care about illustrations, and just want text, other good
sources include Munseys and Manybooks. Both grab legally available
source text from PG and elsewhere, and convvert it to a number of
electronic formats including Plucker.

Munseys: http://munseys.com

Manybooks: http://manybooks.net

Munseys tends to have old pulp stuff that hasn't been added to PG, and
Manybooks offers an assortment of stuff issued under a Creative
Commons license.

And if you go to the Plucker website on the "samples" page, you'll see
the top 20 Gutenberg ebooks indexed and linked from there as well as
the top 'n'; new books posted to Gutenberg:

http://www.plkr.org/samples

Whenever they update their feeds with new books/content, our site
reflects the changes accordingly. They give us a ton of traffic, and
we give it right back.

I don't know what operating system you use on your PC, but I haven't been
able to get the Plucker converter to work with Vista. I downloaded Sunrise
XP, and that has worked great to convert all the HTML documents I want to
Plucker. Because of Plucker and Sunrise XP, I've ended up using my Palm way
more than I ever imagined I could.

Just remember that SunriseXP, being a separate (outside Plucker)
project, does not support all of the features of the stock Plucker
distiller (such as support for tables, owner-id, compression options,
etc).

IIRC, Robert did some work fairly recently to Plucker desktop to make
it work with Vista, but there were no updates to it after those
commits.

I'm happy to figure out how to make an automated daily/weekly snapshot
of Plucker Desktop and post it on the website like we do with the
viewer right now, if someone could explain to me how the build system
works on Windows to get that working.
