Thread: Acroread Syntax Errors

Acroread Syntax Errors

For some reason, acroread left my notebook. I downloaded
the latest
version (7.0.9) from Adobe's site; it's now labeled as _enu_
rather than
_en_; perhaps this refers to unicode support.

Anywho, I installed it on the notebook as always, but
when I try to run it
I get a continuing string of 'syntax error' messages. Since
I've not before
had any problems installing and running acroread, I'm at a
loss what might
have happened.

   Suggestions and ideas welcome.

I recently ran into a similar situation. I don't remember
the exact
error message, but if you post what happens when you try to
run it from
the command line I might recognize the message. If it's the
same error
message I have the solution. I'd post it but I'm lazy and
I'd have to
spend five minutes to find it.

expr: syntax error

   This is repeated ad nauseum.

It is an error that is the result of Gtk moving from 2.x to
2.xx.

There is a suggested set of fixes. I have never gotten them
to work.

Alan,

Sonofagun! So, upgrading gtk+2-2.8.0 to -2.10.0 breaks
acroread? Wow!

I have version 7.0.1 on my main box and that works just
fine. So it must
be related to the acroread version because the one available
for download
from Adobe is 7.0.9.

No solution, eh? That's more than a major PITA since a
simple ctrl-l puts
acroread into full screen mode which is ideal for
illustrating a talk with a
file of pdf slides.

Does this mean that acroread on linux will no longer
work, or might Adobe
come up with a fix?

Yep.

I need to test with earlier versions. I have been handed a
new fix, but I
have not had the time to test it.

There is a solution. People claim that they have gotten it
to work. My
system has some unique tweaks that may be part of the
problem.

They should have a fix very soon now. It is not just a
Fedora or Ubintu
issue, but hammers pretty much every modern distro.

   Feh! Not nice.

I'll help test on my notebook if that's useful.

No tweaks here; just lean 'n' mean and doin' it's job.

   Well, we speak Slackware here.

Thanks very much for the insight, Alan!
