fact, that's what I'm doing right now (logged in as root).

What video card are you using?

I am currently using the Geforce FX5500. However, when I
experienced it on SuSE 10.0, I was using the Radeon 9250.
(Perhaps I should check the error messages when X fails to
launch as a non-root user; it refers to xorg.conf. This
never happens as root.)

Debian 4.0 was released today.

There is a log file for X in /var/log/. Take a look and see
what is
erroring out.

I use the commercial NVIDIA driver. It sounds like a device
permissions
problem though.

Are you using AppArmor?

I am not a big Debian fan, so I doubt I will use it.
