I can report that we have this patch in use since summer,
having no pain
with it but a lot less greylisting problem reports since
then. Lots of
east european bigger ISPs use SMTP servers that always
resend from
switching IPs, making greylisting painful, but they seem to
handle
tarpitting correctly.
I do not have any stats on how many zombies pass tarpitting
easier (or
not at all) though, but from our graphs there's no sign of
more (or
less) spam passing through, it seems to be equally good.
Tarpitting is much better when we get a new customer, as the
initial
greylisting delay is not there, which made customers quite
some stress
as they seemed to receive no more e-mail. A lot of people
seem to be on
the telephone with someone sending "a quick mail",
while the other is
waiting. The 60 second tarpitting delay is no problem, while
greylisting is.
The potential eating of postfix processes David mentioned
comes from
tarpitting sessions waiting the 60 seconds and blocking the
process
during this time. If your mailserver has enough sessions
available to
handle that, try the patch and be happy.
