Develop prelude sensor with exchange message capability

I want to build a generic sensor for Prelude that will have
the option
to communicate with other sensors, exchanging messages. The
idea is to
develop a sensor that will sense the status of the others,
so as in case
of a failure will instantly realise its absence. Any
suggestions?
