Permissions problem with PHP created directories and apache usernames
user name

Hi again! I'm having this common enough (i think) problem:
My PHP scripts run as the user 'nobody'. I need PHP to
make some
directories for me on the fly but it creates them under the
user
'nobody'. This means that I cannot edit or delete them via
FTP as I am
not the user 'nobody'!

The only way around this I have found is to CHMOD 777 all
new
directories I create, making them editable by everyone.
Obvoiusly this
is a security risk so I'm trying to avoid it.
Has anyone got a solution to this problem please?

Thanks
Ciarán

You coule ask your hosting provider to make you part of the same group as apache (which is probably 'nogroup' in your case). It all depends on their setup and how flexible they are.

Cheers,

Psychie

yeah i tried that they're not up for it! I guess I'll just
CHMOD the
directories 777 and restrict access with htaccess. Its a
pity cause
this will slow my site down. Anyone else got an idea?

Hi cron,

you could always create a script that when passed a dir deletes the given dir (tho' for obvious security reasons, make sure it's an obscure filename somewhere private on your webspace)

I had a similar problem to this a while back, which involved this solution. If php can create dirs as user nobody, then php can usually delete them dirs as user nobody

HTH

What does this do? They seem a bit reluctant to do anything
out of the
ordinary.

Thanks frombow, I actually thought of this before, it's
clever
solution but makes it difficult to control the directories
properly -
editing files etc would be a problem. Someone should build a
little
file manager in PHP that works from the server for this
purpose. Maybe
I will one day :cD

Hi cron,

quite a few people have written file manager's that run on the server-side. the only trouble with them is that they usually only do so much so need extending.
Here's one you could try: http://phpfm.sourceforge.net/ or just google for php file manager !

Oh, and hosting provider's don't generally turn safemode off (there's a reason why it's called safemode!)
(read here to find out about safemode: http://uk.php.net/features.safe-mode )
