I seem to have misplaced my fish.

Hi list. It's been a while.
Several years in fact. But it's been that long since I had
a problem.
When recently I upgraded to 3.5.3 (from 3.4), I lost support
for the
fish pseudoprotocol. I don't really use kde, just quanta
and
occasionally konqueror in gentoo on amd64. Gentoo somewhat
recently
split kde up from the monolithic build they used to offer,
but I
figured if I installed kdebase, kdelibs, and quanta I'd be
good to go.
It appears not.

The error I get is:
quanta: ERROR: : couldn't create slave : Unable to create
io-slave:
klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_fish'.

My understanding was that ioslaves was moved into kdebase as
of 3.1.
The gentoo forums, usually so responsive, are giving me no
love on
this topic. Can anyone here offer a suggestion?

[sorry if this email is duplicated; I erroneously sent it
from the
wrong account first time]

Hi Chris,

You need to emerge kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves. (There are
also
kde-base/kdemultimedia-kioslaves and
kde-base/kdepim-kioslaves but you won't
need those for fish.)

Hi Alan. I have actually tried this already.
kde-base/kdebase blocks
kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves, so I unmerged kdebase and
emerged
kioslaves (which brought along kdialog as a dependency) with
the same
result. Then I switched back to kdebase (which likewise
requires
kdebase-kioslaves to be unmerged). Are you suggesting that I
should be
able to emerge BOTH kdebase and kdebase-kioslaves?

I've possibly tried some other things since, though, so
I'll give it another go.

Hi Chris,
kdebase is a meta ebuild, that contains several of the
individual kde-base
ebuilds, among them kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves. There are
two things I would
try in your position: 1) Re-emerge kde-base/kdebase, and if
that does not
work, 2)switch to the split ebuilds, which would be the
preferred method in
any case.

No kde-base/kdebase is the single ebuild for all of kdebase,
while
kde-base/kdebase-meta is the package grouping all the
kdebase ebuilds
together, including the kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves package.
You have to
choose between split ebuilds or not.

Can you check if these files exist for you ==>

/usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/kio_fish.la
/usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/kio_fish.so

(or whatever kde version u have installed)
They should belong to your kde-base/kdebase package.

(Replying to my self)
Chris,
It's hard for me to check, since I'm using the fully split
ebuilds but it just
occurred to me that you may need to emerge kdenetwork
(nother meta-ebuild) to
get the ssh (can you ssh to the server?) and perl scripts
that fish uses.
kdenetwork would be overkill but otherwise you'd need to
migrate to split
ebuilds.

Try to:
- run Quanta as a different user, just to check if it's
related to the
conifg files of the user
- clean the /tmp, /var/tmp, var/cache dirs while you are
logged out

Andras nails it.

Worked as a different user, so I cleaned out the
caches/local configs
and now it works as me. Thanks loads, guys.
