max.gieselmann googlemail.com>:Hey, at the moment I am not sure wether this error really comes from the paths. ;)
I had this error some time ago, but i do not remember what I did to solve it. Try to run: echo $JAVA_HOME
when the output is empty your JAVA_HOME is not set correctly.
Did you try to install java as explained in the tutorial? http://osflash.org/red5/suse
Perhaps you need to
tweak your java VM on the commandline and increase the headspace like this:
java -Xms<some_min_size> -Xmx<some_max_size>
Example: java -Xms256 -Xmx1024

Hey, when I type ps -a red5 is not listet, too. So, try : ps aux | grep red5 or nmap localhost and check whether your rmtp port is open. But I am still sure, that your problem comes from your Java paths.
Try to lunch red5 this way: /usr/lib/red5/red5.sh
There you should get an detailed output, whats going wrong.

Hey, I think you have to set your Java paths. Look at this tutorial on the red5 page: http://osflash.org/red5/suse
. It shows howto install and set your JAVA_HOME path on Suse Linux.
For Debian it should be the same procedure. Install Java and then run
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0 export JAVA_HOME='/usr/java/jdk1.5.0′
after this you should be able to run your /etc/init.d/red5 start
