Silly question about red5 debian package

Hi there just a silly question, i would like to start
building the deb
packages for my ubuntu server. The server is an AMD opteron.
Will i
have to build on the same cpu architecture when building
packages for
amd64 or can it be on intel duo core 2 systems aswell ?

Sorry if its a silly question, its just that i am trying to
reduce my
office power usage at the moment in the hope to demo running
it on
solar power. Consolidate my storage into a 55W NAS, upgrade
my AMD X2
mini PC to a 8W Linutop !! running an AMD chip. So im
running a vmware
of ubuntu server for amd on my macintel at the moment in the
hope i
can still build my packages for the server in this for the

meantime It would
be nicer if linutop was more than 500Mhz as i
wont be able to profile red5 at all on this

Let me know thanks.

there are no silly questions! however, this is way
offtopic.
amd64 is an architecture, just as x86 or ppc. incidently
amd64 processors are
also capable of running x86 code. both amd and intel release
amd64 cpu's -
intel calls this em64t.

so, if you run your amd amd64 cpu in amd64 mode it will run
on an intel em64t
cpu. if you run your amd amd64 cpu in x86 mode it will run
on any x86.

x86 is 32 bit - while amd64 is 64 bit. intel has another
different 64bit
architecture called itanium or ia64 (ia32 being the same as
x86).

java however does not care whether its been compiled on one
or the other
machine. java code is compiled into byte code which then is
run on a virtual
machine on the target platform. java code compiled on an amd
amd64 cpu will
run on any platform which has a JVM available.

i dont know much about debian, but other distros have
architecture independent
packages, which allow a package built on amd64 to be
installed on any other
architecture (a single package for all architectures).

hope this gives some insight.

kind regards
Thilo

Thanks for that, i kinda meant about the package target
rather than
java itself. Maybe it might work for c software aswell. I
tried it out
building a php update package and seemed to install and run
fine. So
the vmware ubuntu on a macbook pro with its architecture of
intel duo
core 2 and a target package of amd64.

Im not too sure though if the linutop will be able to
compile amd64
packages for the opteron server, we shall see.
