Thread: right click permissions on GNOME desktop

right click permissions on GNOME desktop

It seems that I have done something that has caused me to
not be able to
right click on my GNOME desktop and call up a menu. I've
looked at permissions
and ownership on the desktop, as well as SELinux ownership
and permissions.
Everything seems to be OK, but still no menu. I can load KDE
and the menu works
OK there.

The panel at the top and bottom are visible, and any app I
start works, and I
can click on an app to highlight it. So I know that the
mouse left button works.
I can right click on apps, like this thunderbird window, and
that works. But
clicking on the desktop doesn't.

Does anyone know what might be preventing the right click?
Is there maybe a file
or device driver that to be owned by the GNOME user that if
ownership is not
passed to the user, they won't have the ability to right
click on the desktop?

TIA,

Bill Tangren

I'm sure someone else will be able to tell you exactly what
needs to be
fixed... but if you move your ~/.gnome* directories
somewhere temporarily and
then start up Gnome again, do the menus work? You can
always move those
.gnome* directories back.

It *sounds* like nautilus is failing to start for some
reason....I would look at
nautilus to make sure it is still installed, and maybe an
rpm -Va to check that
something hasn't changed. Also it's probably worth starting
your desktop, then
trying to start nautilus by hand and see if that works.

The wierdest thing just happened. I started nautilus from a
terminal window, and
it started just fine. When I stopped it via the
"X" in the upper right corner,
it didn't give me back my cursor. I hit "Ctrl+C",
my desktop flashed, and all my
icons magically reappeared. I haven't a clue why this
happened, and I don't like
mysteries when it comes to my OS (but I DO like having my
desktop back )

Thanks for the suggestion!

Nautilus is meant to run all the time. It doesn't stop just
because
you close one of its windows.
