Does this mean my rpm database has gone? Anyway to restore

One can only guess what is left in your /var/lib/rpm,
perhaps you've
killed your RPM database with earlier attempts. Add option
-vv and try
rpm -vv --rebuilddb to get some debug output of what the
command
does. You can add the option to other commands, too.
