Sounds like maybe rhn_register is trying to start an X
display and it 
can't.

rhn_register --nox

will do it with no X.  See if that helps?

I typically use rhnreg_ks --username=[rhn username]
--password=[rhn 
password] --email=[your e-mail addy]

That registers from the command line just fine.

Yeah, in his original post he skipped the part about doing
this over an ssh
session.  Now we know "the rest of the story". 
  (I
forgot what famous
radio host, used that phrase.)
