EXTENDED X86 OPCODE! |

Hi,
On a Celeron EM64T system with an Intel graphics controller,
I can
install RHEL5 i386 fine, and X runs ok, but when I try to
install
RHEL5 x86_64, it can't start X. So I installed it with VNC
and when
I later try to run "system-config-display
--reconfig", the X log says:
(++) Log file: "/dev/null", Time: Thu Oct 18
18:59:00 2007
(++) Using config file:
"/tmp/tmpuWA5ZYxorg.config"
c000:27b5: 01 ILLEGAL EXTENDED X86 OPCODE!
(EE) I810(0): VBE initialization failed.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable
configuration.
Any idea what's going wrong here?
The graphics controller info:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation
82915G/GV/910GL Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0e) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL
Integrated Graphics Control
ler
Thanks,

Should never happen. I suggest that if you pay for support,
you put it
to the test. Otherwise, use Bugzilla.
It would be interesting to see whether the same problem
occurs with
CentOS5. Logically, it should, but one can never be sure.

It's the same in RHEL 5.0 and X/OS Linux 5.0 (our own
rebuild).
I'll file a bug (when bugzilla is responding again... :-(
).

PXE is your friend : F7
doesn't work either, same problem.
I don't seem to have the 64-bit FC6 images on my NFS server,
but
I don't think this will add much info (unless it would work
;)).
Bugzilla #339361 (but bugzilla is still reacting
s..l..o..w..).

I think (but that text is immeditiately replaced by the
install dialog)
the installer says it also tries VESA after the first
failure.
But I'll also tried it manually on an installed system, that
fails too:
(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(II) Loading sub module "vbe"
(II) LoadModule: "vbe"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/libvbe.so
(II) Module vbe: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/libint10.so
(II) Module int10: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.1.1, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
(II) VESA(0): initializing int10
(WW) VESA(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) VESA(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
c000:27b5: 01 ILLEGAL EXTENDED X86 OPCODE!
(II) VESA(0): VESA BIOS not detected
(II) UnloadModule: "vesa"
(II) UnloadModule: "int10"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/libint10.so
(II) UnloadModule: "vbe"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/libvbe.so
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
For me, the best workaround is to use the 32-bit OS, but I
hope to
get a solution at some moment...
