Hmm... this *did* work, but now I get:

  ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:831:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to
create IPC semaphore
  sox: Failed writing default: cannot open audio device

Not sure when this started to happen.  I also use
hibernate/resume on
my laptop, maybe it is related to this.

Any suggestions?

No, but I feel your pain, having just wrestled with this
recently. 
Could play an ogg file on startup, but after recording a
file with 
krec, all players failed to open the audio device for
playback of any 
sound file, even with full duplex enabled, or if krec was
stopped. 
Some kind of locking?  Guess you get just one shot at using
the 
soundcard anymore.  Couldn't find an answer in googleland
either...
