Try deleting the db files before the rebuild. They are
located in
/var/lib/rpm called __db.001, 002 etc.

Subject: [rhn-users] up2date problem
Yesterday the core router went down during a up2date -u
session. The
power on the server may have also gone down. Immediately
before that I
believe to have successfully up2date -u to update up2date
itself. Now,
when i try to issue
up2date -anything, I get:
up2date -u
RPM error. The message was:
Could not determine what version of Red Hat Linux you are
running.
If you get this error, try running
rpm --rebuilddb
I have of course tried the rpm --rebuilddb several times and
still get
the same error. I have tired to --force a -Uvh of the
latest up2date
which did not help either, but it did install without any
problems
(except for dependencies which seemed strange since the
version I was
trying to update seemed to be exactly the same as the
up2date version
currently on the system.
