Hi all,
I have not posted for a long time but I wanted you all to know what is
going on with me. My face is doing just fine, but my eyes are terrible.
Gritty, foreign body feeling, vision loss in my right eye and constant
redness and bloodshot. Once ocular rosacea takes hold, it becomes very
difficult to treat. My advice to any rosacean that has not developed
ocular rosacea yet, is to get treated. Don't put it off like I did.
Any global treatment to the face should work to keep rosacea out of
your eyes. Medication such as doxy might be a great way to go, EVEN if
you feel like it is not helping your flushing or erythema. IPL and
other modalities will work if given in time. Thanks and best to all,
Dr Steve Johnson

What have you been doing for your eyes Steve? Lid scrubs, warm compresses, eye baths, baby shampoo, erythromycin ointment, thera tears foam is new and I find it wonderful. These have all been helpful to me at one time or another. Probably are more things that someone else can suggest.
It really is hard to keep on top of occular when it gets out of control. You might need to use a combination of some of the things i listed.
What about oral antibiotics??? Sorry if this is all old news to everyone but its the best I can do lol.
good luck to you

Hi there,
I've had ocular rosacea for years and it's only been recently I've learned how to get it under
some kind of control. Here's what worked for me--
We all understand that you have to have the right "oil / mucus / tear" ratio in your eyes to
keep them feeling lubricated, and less inflamed and itchy.
Blocked meibomian glands prevent that. Meibomian glands are the oil glands on the
eyelid that secrete oily stuff that lubricates your eyes. When mine are blocked, that oil
can't come out, and my eyes feel dry and itchy.
So I figured I needed to unblock those glands. I figured I could "express" the glands with
a pair of dull slant-tip tweezers.
First, I press below the eye to make the lower eyelid pooch out a bit, and then (very
carefully and gently) squeeze the eyelid, to express those glands. Be careful, don't press
too hard, and make sure your tweezers have a slant end, not a sharp pointy end.
If your ocular rosacea is like mine, this will yield some yellow oil or pus. That stuff
needs to come out. Getting it out on a regular basis made my eyes feel better over time.
I think if it stays, it blocks the gland, sort of like a blackhead blocks your skin pores.
That oil needs to travel freely and come out to lubricate your eyes.
It helped me, I hope it helps others.
Two other things have really helped my ocular rosacea-- a low carb diet and frequent,
repeated IPL.

Hi Steve
This is a very late response, but I'm just getting to my Rosacea Support e-mails after a while away.
Sorry to hear about your problem - I also developed ocular rosacea a couple of years ago, after having facial rosacea for quite a few years. My first opthamologist misdiagnosed it, and treated me for months with steroids (mainly Tobradex) which ended up raising my IOP to a dangerous level. Luckily, I found a different optha, who recognized the condition as ocular rosacea with MGD. He started me on 100mg of doxy 2x a day, artificial tears a minimum of 4 times a day (I find Refresh Endura to be the best for me), and had me doing warm compresses 2-4 times a day (this is very tedious, but needs to be done.). I got very slow, gradual progress, but after about 9 months, I had a definite improvemet and he took me off the doxy. The bloodshot condition, blurriness, and excess tearing went away at least about 75%. I remained in good shape for several months.
Unfortunately and stupidly, this past August I went to Austin Texas and was out in the sun for several hours (it's amazingly hot there!) - although I had put sunblock on, it apparently wore off, and I got quite a sunburn on my face. Lo and behold, within a week, my ocular symptoms came back with a vengeance. I went back to my optha, and he put me back on the regimen including doxy, and said it probably will take quite a while to improve.
Bottom line, I agree that OR is hard to treat, and there's probably no permanent cure for it, but I think in most cases you can improve your condition, and keep it at bay to some extent. I hope you feel better soon, I definitely sympathize with you.
