I have very mild rosacea right now;no papules,pustules,or burning.I
have transient redness and mild itching of the skin. But, my allergies
are out of control right now.I live in Dallas,Texas. They have gotten
much worse since moving here 3 years ago.I am on allegra-
d,singulair, astelin spray and I have been doing the benadryl quick
dissolve strips at night.I am still sneezing, nose running, and my face
is a lot itchier now.I am going to my allergist tomorrow to talk about
doing the scratch test thing to start the shots.I hate everything about
it!The testing is so expensive, weekly office visit costs for the shots ,
not to mention the high rate of false negatives that I think hinders
you form getting the most relief. But I am miserable right now,I stick
my head out the door and that is all it takes for me to start
sneezing.I am also worried about what will happen to my face when they
do the testing for like 70 possible allergen triggers at one time.I am
concerned about an acute flareup afterwards.Any input, advice or ideas
would be appreciated!thanks,
Denah

Hi, Denah,

I wonder....are you a milk drinker? I have never been tested for
allergies, but I suffered from terrible respiratory and sinus
infections all my life. It was always worse in the fall when the
pollen came out. I always assumed my problem was the pollen. For
several years I was in the doctor's office every 3 months. None of
the allergy meds helped me for very long.

At the suggestion of my husband, I stopped drinking milk 10 years ago
and haven't had an infection since.

Since I am sensitive to the pollen, and still have that occasional
bowl of ice cream, I use a saline spray in my nose every single day,
morning and night, to keep my sinuses clear. Sometimes I use the
Neti pot which is even more effective. It works as a great
preventative.

Incidentally, my husband's upper respiratory problems used to be so
bad he had to take antihistimines every night. And, even then, he
sometimes had to sleep on the couch because his breathing was so
loud. He stopped drinking milk before I did and all his symptoms
completely disappeared. He is NEVER stuffy.

I had allergy testing several years ago. My rosacea wasn't bad then
and I don't remember having a flare-up. I was put on Claritin and
Flonase but they never quite worked well enough.

I eventually went to a acupuncturist trained in traditional Chinese
medicine. He took me off the prescription meds and gave me some
anti-inflammatory herbs instead. He also said no dairy and that I
should try to eat organic when it's practical and to drink purified
(reverse osmosis) water. The organic food and RO water are to help
reduce the chemical exposure that can cause sensitive people so much
irritation. He told me that mild itchiness can be from a buildup of
toxins that irritate your nerves. I have a spot on my chest that
starts to itch whenever I've eaten too many processed foods.

You might be surprised at how few reactions you have with the
testing. You will probably react to pollens and mold, but remember
that things you are 'sensitive to' won't cause an immune response
and can't be tested with an allergy test, though sensitivities can
make you just as miserable.

I did have itchy eyes, ears, and throat. My sinuses were constantly
so stuffed I was always on the verge of getting a sinus infection.
When I wasn't out in public I had kleenex stuffed up my nose to
catch the constant drips. Now my seasonal allergies are almost non-
existant. I still take my herbs, drink pure water, and eat organic
when I can. I would never go back to prescription (some are now
otc) medicines.

That said, the allergy testing can be a great tool to help you find
out what to avoid, if it's avoidable. Good luck!
