Item journal size and display.

I note in the mailing lists references to problems of
journal size bloat and
that these have been ameliorated in more recent roundup
releases.

I don't yet have any trackers big enough for this to be a
problem but even if
the journals themselves are no longer too big from a storage
point of view,
what about the "History Section" on an item page,
especially if the item is
persistent (eg a user).

It seems the growth of an item history could prove
problematic from a journal
display point of view if it has many journal entries, eg say
user1 creates 1000
issues over a period of some months, then user1 will have a
very large journal
appended to the bottom of the user1 page. Likewise any issue
that encounters a
lot of activity especially if one wants to keep the issue on
an ongoing basis.

Can the journal display be batched or size limited (on most
recent perhaps)?

Can old journal entries be deleted or retired?

Is this functionality something proposed for the
_HTMLItem.journal method?

If so, perhaps a few more arguments may be useful (eg,
'size').

Bruce.

In theory, yes

There is facility for doing this, yes.

$ roundup-admin help pack
Usage: pack period | date

Remove journal entries older than a period of time
specified or
         before a certain date.

A period is specified using the suffixes
"y", "m", and "d". The
suffix "w" (for "week") means 7
days.

               "3y" means three years
"2y 1m" means two years and one
month
               "1m 25d" means one month and 25
days
"2w 3d" means two weeks and three
days

         Date format is "YYYY-MM-DD" eg:
             2001-01-01

Unfortunately this feature doesn't allow you to operate on
just a
single item or class.

      Richard

Thanks, good to know. I'll use admin's pack if/when I need
to and revisit
batching the journal if it proves necessary.

It's a pity one cannot choose which journal(s) to remove,
some grow very big
with relatively forgettable information whereas others are
"must keep" audit
trails one might need one day in court

Cheers, Bruce.
