For RoR hosting we use http://
www.bluefur.com/inbound/go.php?aid=205
They have stellar technical service, but sales and billing
(probably done
by the same person) is difficult to contact and to deal
with.
Anyway, they just built a new server running Rails 1.2. If
you tell them
that's what you need, they're going to put you on this one.
Good disk space, good bandwidth. Unlimited domain name,
unlimited MySQL,
unlimited emails, php, RoR and Fatastico. All that for 6.95
per month -15%
for 12 months or -20% for 24 months. They're locate in the
Vancouver area.
I strongly suggest that you pay by Paypal and do not use
your credit card
to buy.
Have a good day.

I too agree on the rate. A programmer that would normally
be paid
65K in a company with 3 weeks vacation should charge at
least 45$ an
hour, assuming 30 billable hours per week, which I think is
a bit
risky (depends if the programmer works on short or long-term
projects). We also have to pay for software (editors), new
machines,
marketing expenses, RRQ, ... so I would even stretch to 50$.
I
offer a "decreasing" rate based on the size of the
project. The more
you consumme, the cheapest is the rate.
By the way, I'm a freelancer in Montreal and every new
projects I
start is in RoR. Can't wait to have canadian hosting
companies that
have decent RoR hosting offerings.

I don't understand this.
Do you have ssh access at 6.95$ CAN per month?
How do you manage with gems for example
And why do you recommend to pay by Paypal.

Is this a virtual server hosting arrangement? That is, do
they
provide you your very own isolated Linux installation
running on
VMWare, for example?

I've used site5 (the 5$ a month deal) and have had nothing
but a great
experience; quick support, proper ssh access, 55GB of
storage and 5TB of
transfer. They've also got Rails contributors as engineers,
which helps
in a few ways.

| I've got a site5 account and am satisfied with the quality of service you get for 5$/mo. Really cheap considering the bandwidth limitations.
I've got a question though. I have a RoR application running over there and it seems that after a few days, I've got dead dispatch.fcgi processes lying around until I reach the limit, then the application isn't responsive. By that time, I can't login via ssh since my account has reached its thread limit so I need to ask support to kill some processes to regain access to my account. Since that happened, I've setup a somewhat sloppy but functional script that kills the rogue processes. Have you experienced that at site5? It seems to be a frequent problem but I've failed to find a proper explanation... I would really rather eliminate the problem than eliminate its symptoms.
My aplication gets around 4k to 5k page views per day so a resource leak could potentially add up...

They have stellar technical service, but sales and billing (probably done by the same person) is difficult to contact and to deal with. Anyway, they just built a new server running Rails 1.2. If you tell them that's what you need, they're going to put you on this one.
Good disk space, good bandwidth. Unlimited domain name, unlimited MySQL, unlimited emails, php, RoR and Fatastico. All that for 6.95 per month -15% for 12 months or -20% for 24 months. They're locate in the Vancouver area.
I strongly suggest that you pay by Paypal and do not use your credit card to buy.
Have a good day.

I too agree on the rate. A programmer that would normally be paid 65K in a company with 3 weeks vacation should charge at least 45$ an hour, assuming 30 billable hours per week, which I think is a bit risky (depends if the programmer works on short or long-term projects). We also have to pay for software (editors), new machines, marketing expenses, RRQ, ... so I would even stretch to 50$. I offer a "decreasing" rate based on the size of the project. The more you consumme, the cheapest is the rate.
By the way, I'm a freelancer in Montreal and every new projects I start is in RoR. Can't wait to have canadian hosting companies that have decent RoR hosting offerings.

IMHO, the people who posted that ad are out of touch with the Montreal market.
I'd say that it would be very hard to find any serious RoR freelance developers without expecting to pay 40 to 80$/hr.

Does anyone else find those wages fairly low for expertise? Are there so many people desperate to get a Rails job that we'll take lower salaries?

if you can't figure out what's the problem, you could switch to lightty and mongrel. I am not sure though that site5 servers will allow more than 1 mongrel running (at 5$ per month) Le 07-03-29 à 02:20, Jean-Pierre Martineau a écrit :

Heri:Thank s for the tip, I will look into that in the next couple of days and let you know whether it's possible to have multiple mongrel instances running.
Edward: Yeah, I ended up doing the old killall dispatch.fcgi cron job trick. That will keep things working until I find the actual cause of the problem. Thanks for the link.
Great idea for the meetings. Count me in, it's always nice to discuss RoR and such.
Cheers to all the that were at DemoCamp and at Austin's afterwards. Nice meeting you all.
