this is going to date me somewhat:
Having been in IT for 30 years - IBM S/360 mainframes, consider, when
comparing CakePhp to
Ror; it is similar to comparing Assembler language to Cobol language.
Alot of the responses so far
are very accurate, and timely. And, in my opinion, describe both
development methodologies quite
well.
That being said, I am responding to this inquiry, because, having had
exposure to many
platforms, and dev-technologies - Asp.Net, Java, Php, and now Ror - I
found that I am in a
similar position to yourself in deciding which environment to
"proselytize". I might add to the mix,
that, so far as I have observed, Php is a "procedural" approach (hence
patches as jpmartineau comments) versus a very definite Oop foundation
with Ruby. Let's face it. Php, and now CakePhp, have been
prominent in the field for over 10 years because for a time, it was(is)
the "lite"(overhead), and FREE alternative to the company we love to
loath that brought Asp to web-application dev. Note, Asp is still a
very "established" base for those who can afford to have, and maintain,
the entire "shoppe" that goes with it.
In the end, I think it "boils down" to one's liking(taste - lSegal)
for Italian or French wine. Bear in mind, also, drinking either
produces the same affect. As to which one will stand the test of time
or
dominate the scene; do you prefer Beaujolais or Bordeaux?
btw: I prefer Beaujolais! And, when I began using Ror, I experienced a
"buzz" that I got when
I first used Visual InterDev!?!?!? And, let us not forget "to drain the
swamp" when we are up
to our necks in alligators!!!!!!
- a M(ontreal) Ror devotee et bonne chance!

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if someone on the list had any experience with
CakePHP. If so, which of the two competing frameworks do you prefer?
RoR or CakePHP?
If you switched to RoR, what were the reasons to make the switch and
pay the price of learning a new language and a new framework? Was it
worth it or you wish you would have stayed with CakePHP?
I have pre-CakePHP experience (plain old PHP with Smarty) and of
course using a framework like RoR is a giant step forward. But I've
read that CakePHP is very similar to RoR.
Thanks for your answers (I'm trying to convince a potential customer
to switch to RoR - or at least give it a try).

Ruby is far more powerful than PHP. Still, it may depend mostly on
what language you prefer.
Daniel.
