Dear devs,

I am using xchat-gnome on Ubuntu Edgy, and most of the time
I cannot
connect to the IRC channel. Here is the error message:

Auto-away plugin 0.4 loaded (using GNOME screensaver)
--- Looking up irc.freenode.net..
Connecting to chat.freenode.net (82.96.64.4) port 6667..
Connected. Now logging in..
*** Looking up your hostname...
*** Checking ident
*** Couldn't look up your hostname

The strange thing is that sometimes (perhaps once a day) I
*do*
connect after this message is displayed. I cannot connect
with Gaim
2.0 either.

Any ideass?

George.

Just a shot into the blue: identd not running properly?

Even though I would've guessed Ubuntu sets up all that stuff

properly. Never really used it myself, but wasn't it very
user-friendly?

Ident is the protocoll which try to identify a loggedin
user:

ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1413.txt

The proto is a little bit old, but still in use as many
other protos

Looks like there isn't a reverse entry for your ip address.

what do you get on:

host $YOUR_EXTERNAL_IP

identd is an 'identity server' - it's a holdback from the innocent days of the internet when everybody trusted everybody else. ; Each server would host an 'identd' to identify users on the system. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identd for more details.

It's not strictly necessary to run an identd in order to connect to freenode. I'm connected without one. But I also have both a forward and reverse DNS entry for my host, so maybe that plays a role.

Here's a typical connect log for me:

07:14 !irc.freenode.net *** Looking up your hostname...
07:14 !irc.freenode.net *** Checking ident
07:14 !irc.freenode.net *** Found your hostname
07:14 !irc.freenode.net *** No identd (auth) response

If you're still having trouble connecting, try a different server.

Me too but your provider should have a reverse entry for his
dynamic
range.

Here :

host 85.124.175.248
248.175.124.85.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer
85-124-175-248.dynamic.xdsl-line.inode.at.
