Application working on a remote server

Hello i have done a project, now i want to know how can i
make it
running on the server.

i have upload the entire tree of folders, but it didn't do
anything...
yess i know that i haven't do something, could you tell me
what is?

i got this project on hostgator, they got rubyonrails
available.

i try to contact them, but they say, the problem might be in
my app, but 
my app, run fine in my local machine,  by that reason i ask
if there 
special steps to run an app on a shared hosting?
