Mediawiki has grown enourmously due to the success of the
wikipedia. It
seems likely that it will emerge as a (more-or-less)
standard. Please
run both and see what the users choose.

I hope it's something that makes it possible for
translators to spot changes between versions.

This was indeed my main concern with a CMS.

Fortunately, I think I've found one, which is Plone + added
plugins. A
quick preview can be found at http://cheddar.
