I have been experimenting with Google Maps (aka Google
Local) over the
past 12-18 months. In mid July Google started placing a map
along with
the primary local listing (see
http
://www.seroundtable.com/archives/004132.html or
http://blumenthals.
com/blog/?p=14 ) prominently on the main search
results.

I am wondering when and why this occurs as opposed to the
normal 3 text
links that normally appear.

Mike

Mike, did you ever submit listing to Google Maps? I did for
a few
websites most of them are showing up with the map. This
looks to be a
recent change on Google's part. Here is the Google URL I
listed them
with:

https://www.go
ogle.com/local/add/login

It seems that "local search optimization" is going
to be interesting.
Different businesses wind up being featured depending on the
query, so
that would probably (again as always) rely on a combination
of on-page
keywords and off-page trust and relevancy factors. What's
interesting
is you can definitely find yourself not showing up even if
you
submitted to Google Local Business Center and activated your
listing
with the postcard, etc. -- because you have to be diligent
in the type
of description you write.
