Thread: Analytics stats for a pointer URL

Analytics stats for a pointer URL

Hello there;

Does anyone know why Analytics is not showing activity from
a pointer
site? A new client has been using their "old" url
as a dedicated
landing page for a recent marketing initiative but there
isn't a hint
of the URL anywhere in the stats.

What if any are the advantages/disadvantages of using the
second URL
in place of a dedicated landing page?

Thanks!

Not sure if I correctly understand your situation. But here
goes.

If your dedicated landing page URL is unique and not linked
into from
any page on your website, that may the reason Analytics
isn't showing
any activity.

Some other bases to touch.
Does the landing page have the Analytics code embedded into
it?
Is the landing page URL included in your generated xml
google site
map?

Need some clarification on your second question re:
"using a second
URL in place of a dedicated landing page?" Do you mean
you'd use an
existing regular page on the website as your "landing
page?"

Hi,

When you say Analytics I imagine you say Google Analytics.

Here is how it works:
- GA reports the URIs (and not the URLs) ... so let's say that you landing page on domain A is called "index.html"; and your home page on domain B is called "index.html"; there would be no difference between the pages fro GA and you will not be able to track the results separately.
- on the other hand GA allows tracking of a site that spans across multiple different domain names or subdomanins, however the transfer (linking) between the domains has to be done in a certain special way and the GA jscript code to be inserted in the pages also has to have an extra line (called utmLinker ... or similar).

I suggest you read the following help file from Google Analytics: http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55503

At the bottom it also explains how you can use advanced filtering to include the domain name as well in the data reported for the website.

Hope this helps,
Alex
