SEM 2.0'ers,
In setting up this group I feel like we accomplished some
goals: of
trying to resurrect a quieter, more professional setting for
quality
search related discussion, similar to I-Search and archaic
email based
platforms of the past.
Where it's been a bit lacking so far is in terms of
structure and post
volume.
As luck would have it, I've found a world class Community
Leader for
our group in the person of Adam Audette. Adam has offered to
take over
as "administrator" of this group, building on his
long experience in
online discussion groups related to marketing. I will share
his bio
below. In short, nothing too drastic is going to change and
I am still
going to be posting, but Adam will take it upon himself to
lead and
foster discussion (eg. with weekly topics and such), and
will in
general take the initiative to keep the group growing and
helping us
all.
Currently, Adam works with a group called LED, a very
popular tight
knit discussion community of online marketers, but it runs
much deeper
than that. He hails from Bend, Oregon so he shares
"primordial search
chops" with the likes of Derrick Wheeler and Marshall
Simmonds, and
other longtime search experts who reside in Bend.
Here's some additional info about Adam. I expect
"administrator" is
too boring a title, so maybe community leader will fit. He
is
definitely a leader.
Best regards,
Andrew Goodman

Internet marketing was a family affair for me. I'll start
from the
beginning, and sketch a little timeline of my experiences
online:
- My father John started an early online marketing firm
named
Multimedia Marketing Group (MMG). That was about 1995 or so,
and I
got involved in about 96-97. Most of what I did in the early
days
was hand-submit sites to the "WebStep Top 100," a
collection of
directory sites MMG put together. Pretty fun to look back
on
archive.org:
http://web.archive.org/web/19970215062
534/http://www.mmgco.com/4-star.html
This is a list of "4 Star" sites to submit to.
Classic stuff.
- MMG was one of the first interactive companies to really
focus on
search. My dad rescued Marshall Simmonds from CompUSA, and
he went
on to build out the SEO department for MMG. Other notable
SEOs who
came from MMG: Derrick Wheeler (Acxiom Digital), Jeremy
Sanchez
(GSI), Bill Hunt (GSI), and Detlev Johnson (Position Tech).
Paul
Owen (MarketLeap) worked on some projects with MMG. All of
these
guys except Detlev live in my home town, Bend Oregon, where
MMG had
its offices. Bend is the search mountain community!
- I started really getting into online community stuff in
about
97-98. AudetteMedia was an email publisher at that time (we
still
do some of that today). I-Sales was a major list back then,
along
with I-Search (which Andrew moderated for a time) and a
bunch of
others. This was before blogs, so email was actually
important.
(Funny thing is, in-house email lists still occupy the sweet
spot
for conversions in my experience.)
- I started with MSN in the late 90s after working for an
MMG
client, LinkExchange, that MSN bought. I stayed with them
for
several years, managing the bCentral discussion list for
Internet /
search marketing, the LinkExchange Digest (LED). It had well
over
150,000 subscribers back then. When bCentral closed its
doors, they
gave me the community as part of a severance.
- I still publish the LED today. It's a passion for me,
that's for
sure, and a labor of love. I've put together (by hand) over
2,500
issues of the LED over the last 10 years, and read probably
over
100,000 posts these many years. It definitely keeps me on my
toes,
because I need to stay sharp and current. The real lesson I
take
away from it all is how rare the combination of insight and
writing
ability is in the search world! That's what originally drew
me to
Andrew's work.
- Right around 2001 the AudetteMedia brand went
"underground" to
focus on consulting only, and we changed the business name
to
Adventive. Adventive was sold in about 2002-3 to Andrew
Bourland,
the co-founder of Clickz, for a very low figure. Fire sale
all the
way, right around the dismal bubble era. Andrew can speak to
this
time period for I-Search better than I can.
- AudetteMedia was always a side project for me. I've been
fortunate to get a lot of leads through the work I do, so
over the
years sort of cherry picked fun projects. It paid the bills
while I
went to school. But then a couple years ago my daugher Lilly
was
born and everything changed!
- I now focus 100% on search marketing and online community
strategy. My company just had a soft launch, there's a long
way to
go, but we're growing and it's always challenging (and
sometimes
fun). One of the areas I'm really excited about is community
search
marketing - basically leveraging user-generated content in
useful
ways.
I'm excited to be a part of the community here for several
reasons.
One is the opportunity to work with Andrew, who in my
opinion is
one of the most advanced and insightful search marketers
working
today. And I'm really interested in this community - I think
it has
great potential to grow. The seeds and sprouts are here, we
just
need to do a little "gardening" to get things
blooming.

Andrew, thanks so much for the intro! Love that subject line
To my fellow SEM 2.0'ers-- hi *waves hand*. Or as we say
around here
in Central Oregon, howdy partner.
I don't imagine my presence here will do any sort of
"instant magic;"
definitely a slow (and fun) road is ahead. And nothing
really BIG will
change, because I think what works here will continue to
work. This
group just needs "a little lovin'" and maybe some
pot stirring too.
There's a ton of experience and high-level marketing skill
in this
group, and I'm looking forward to coaxing some of that out
(yeah I'm
talkin' to you!). Speaking of... Andrew and I have been
talking about
some new ideas, and I'll post about that soon.
There's no way in Hades that I can fill the enormous shoes
Andrew
wears (so to speak). There just aren't many people in the
world with
his level of search marketing skill and experience. So don't
expect me
to be as awesome as Andrew, okay?! See how good I am at
deflecting
expectations?
In all seriousness, I'm really excited to be a part of SEM
2.0. Really
looking forward to the great discussions ahead, with Andrew
and all of
you as well.
Sincerely,
Adam

Congratulations Adam! I'm looking forward to some thrilling discussions with everyone in SEM 2.0.
This discussion list has enough members to become a serious distraction from our daily duties, yet new topics come in only a few times per week and the vast majority of members are passively lurking in the shadows. I would like to invite everyone, no matter your level of expertise, to tap into this global knowledge base for internet marketing. Adam, as the new community leader, maybe you could do a poll on what topics existing members are most interested in exploring right now?

| Keyword Datamining |

|
2007-10-16 17:35:13 |
Hi Everyone!
I am interested to know how everyone involved with PPC
campaign development projects delivery and spend data for
clients at proposal stage, prior to starting the campaign. I
have become more and more frustrated with the inaccuracy of
the various keyword services and in particular their search
volume predictions...Google does not provide numbers,
Keyword Discovery numbers are quite heavy and WordTracker
numbers quite light on.
Currently we use WordTracker's US database and then massage
the numbers to our target marketplace (UK) and down to each
respective major engine using (again unreliable) HitWise
search share data. As a matter of course now we
underestimate the delivery volumes and in some instances
quite a bit if the target terms of spread away from generic
terms. :-(
Looking forward to your insight,
Damien
