Adam,

That advice (not using an XML sitemap) still seems to be in
vogue on
SEOMOZ. The thinking there is that submitting the XML
sitemap actually
makes it harder for you to discover "weak" pages
on a site because
Google gets them via the sitemap as opposed to a natural
crawl.
