We are in looking for a creative, energetic problem solver
to help us
build the most compelling news and information applications
on the
Internet. The Software Development Engineer will design,
build and
maintain a variety of web-based software applications and
services to
be used by millions of users in all parts of the world. Our
applications span several technology layers from the
database to the
web server to the customers' desktop. The ideal candidate
will have
experience with all aspects of high volume consumer web and
server
applications.
Key technical skills include:
**Proficiency in Java Server Pages, Java JSTL, JavaScript,
HTML, CSS,
and DHTML
** Working knowledge of both server-side (Java servlets) and
client-
side (object oriented JavaScript, css, Ajax, etc)
development.
** Hands-on experience with Linux, CVS, Apache, tomcat setup
and
remote debugging are highly desired.
** Understanding of browser compatibility and cross-platform
issues
will be a key skill.
Minimum:
• Working with Java in a customer facing environment.
• Experience with object-oriented design and development
using
the J2EE platform including Java, Java Server Pages,
servlets, Struts
and Enterprise Java beans.
• Solid knowledge of structured software development and
object-
oriented design methodologies.
• Extensive knowledge of HTML cross-platform and
cross-browser
compatibility issues as well as detailed familiarity with
Netscape
and MSIE 4.0.
• Detailed knowledge of the HTTP protocol and the issues
surrounding it.
• Ability to write unit tests for own code. Participate in
Product Lifecycle
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to quickly analyze requirements and
specifications,
raise issues, and develop detailed technical implementation
plans.
• Ability to work independently and escalate issues as
appropriate.
Preferred:
• BS in computer science or other technical field.
• Experience developing and maintaining secure, high quality
client side (JavaScript, etc) code.
• Experience with JSTL or other tag libraries for data
output
usage.
• Knowledge of application performance and load testing and
tuning.
• Experience with content management systems.
• Knowledge of caching schemes.
• Experience writing SQL queries.
• Experience with database driven website development.
• Experience with a variety of web development platforms
(e.g.,
PHP, .Net).
• Experience configurating and installing Apache (proxy
configuration, caching, etc) and Tomcat.
• Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux.
