I have found the most fool proof way to prepare a hard drive for a
cloning operation is to just put it in a laptop that I can boot from a
CD and start the XP install process. AFter the F8 agreement, you can
choose the partition and let windows format it. I usually let it beging
to copy the files and reboot once, then I kill the unit, take the
ready-to-go hard drive out and clone it. Never have a problem with
stupid error messages like hard drive not found, or disk read error or
such when I do this first.

That would be a good idea for a standard xp install but this is
a ibm thinkpad which has extra utilities included. It didnt come
with a xp cd only the usual restore cd. I could try to make one
from the os but previous attempts have created a cd that instantly
resets
after the press any key to boot windows install cd prompt.

I eventually found the driveimageXML on the simply home page.
It was very simple to use. I am happy that i have a restore image
just in case partioning goes ary.

Thanks to all that helped
