Unlike AVG where you download an installation program which you must
then update to the latest database, Avira downloads the installation
file with the latest updates included.
Avira is somewhat awkward when it comes to telling you that you have
the latest updates, though. It definitely does not behave in the
customary AVG format.
I remember when I used Avira in Windows 9X, when in order to update
their free version it was necessary to download the latest
installation file, then uninstall the previous version prior to
installing to the latest version which included the latest database.
I then discovered AVG and used it up until it recently became an
all-in-one security option.
I don't like putting all my eggs into the same basket. Now I use Avira
in XP and to differentiate, I use PC Tools' Antivirus in 2K and
nothing in BSD and Linux(*), where you don't have to install an
anti-virus program.
Did I post on how to get rid of the nagging "upgrade" screen for Avira?

Hello;
What are the advantages of "Avast Anti Virus", "AVG Anti Virus" and "Avira Anti Virus" programs?

That's not how it worked wiith me, Armando.
I downloaded and installed the latest Avira file. I tried to update, but
it refused saying I had an out of date license. I saved the most recent
license file to C/program files/avira. I then tried to update again. It
had a little timer for the connection. After 3 minutes, I gave up. The
license download took a few attempts as the connection timed out. I
reckoned their servers are/were overwhelmed and decided to go with Avast.
