Hi,
My name is Fred and I live in rural upstate New York with my wife
and 3 cats.
I've been running Outlook Express 6 for the past 4 years on our Dell
computer (Dimension 3000), with XP.
Since June 26, strange things have been happening on OE on my wife's
side of this computer. I do not see these symptoms on my side. I
do my e-mail on yahoo, while my wife downloads the e-mail on the
computer from our local provider. Occasionally, Rose will download
the e-mail on my side of the computer.
In the words of Rose, this is what she experiences.
1. REVERTS TO DESKTOP TOO SOON. When I go from START and scroll
up to open OE, the OE screen is supposed to open up so I can
download mail. NOW, however, it opens up, then in a split second it
closes and goes back to desktop! It does this whether there happens
to be mail to download or not. It happens regardless of whether
it's the first time opening it or the nth time throughout the day.
Sometimes it even shuts down 2x and reverts to the Desktop. But, in
the end, it finally opens up and stays open.
2. The TOOLBAR is now different in organization. Same tools, but
re-arranged.
3. It STUTTERS! A message comes in, then a shadow appears below
the entry, then disappears, but I get my mail.
4. MAIL INSIDE MAIL! Three times this has happened. I get an
email with another email embedded within in.
5. Then one time, a message came in and DISAPPEARED. I have no
filters in play.
So, is this OE or is this McAfee interfering with OE? Is this
happening to anyone else? Any direction would be appreciated.
Fred is now writing.
For the past few days, Rose has seen e-mail messages imbedded in
other e-mail messages. Today, we got an e-mail dated June 28 with
another message imbedded within this message.
Rose turned off the spam filter months ago, because when she is on a
yahoo group, everyone ends up as span.
QUESTIONS:
1. What will happen if I restore the computer to a date earlier than
when this all took place?
2. Will that action clear up the problem or is there a better
approach to rectify this situation?
Thank you ahead of time for all your help.
Fred

Sounds like you might need to repair outlook. You don't mention if there are
any error messages that accompany the problems Rose experiences. If you are
receiving error messages it would be good if you recorded them and shared
them with us.
Does Rose do any preventive maintenance on OE?
In the meantime, look over the problem issues here and see if anything might
be helpful to you.

This sounds like behavior caused by the .dbx files growing too large.
Is the inbox filled with lots of old messages?
what about the deleted items folder - is it filled with messages also?
Third - what about the sent items folder?
You can see how large the .dbx files are by doing a file search for
*.dbx, and look at the file sizes for the ones located in her profile.
If any of them exceed 1 GB in size, that is very likely the cause of the
unusual behavior.
