1. Q&A: Dynamips Drawbacks
Send your toughest Cisco technical questions to editor tcpmag.com
with the subject line "Attn: Scott."
Scott,
In response to the "Cisco Certs on a Budget"
Q&A
(
http://tcpmag.com/qanda/article.asp?EditorialsID=397),
how come
you did not mention Dynamips? You can't get much cheaper
than that.
Dynamips is a pretty good simulator.
-- Mike
------------------------------
Mike,
Very true. Dynamips has been gaining a lot of popularity as
a router
simulation package. It separates itself from many smaller
simulator
packages out there because it runs ACTUAL IOS images, which
means
you can use just about every feature all from the comfort of
your
own PC.
As for why I didn't mention it...well, there are still some
gray
areas when it comes to this software. Namely legal gray
areas. Many
people who use this to study don't actually own the rights
to use
the IOS image they're running in the Dynamips process.
Another
issue is that usage of Cisco's IOS outside a router may well
violate the license for it.
Now, keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer, nor am I planning
to pass
judgment on any type of Dynamips usage. However, I've tried
to get
an official word from Cisco and haven't gotten much of a
response,
even after pursuing different internal angles. Good? Bad?
Indifferent? Dunno. I know that Cisco Learning Partners are
supposedly unable to promote its usage -- which, by itself,
says
something, although it's not "official" legalese.
The flip side of things is that to run a full lab, you can't
emulate
the switching platforms. So you're missing a BIG chunk of
CCIE
studies by using Dyanmips. You can interface Dynamips with
real
network cards on your PC, so you COULD have a PC with a
bunch of
network cards plugged into real switches to make things
work.
And one other issue revolves around how much you value your
own
time. Dynamips isn't necessarily easy to set up. Running on
a flavor
of Unix is the most efficient method, but you can use your
favorite
Windows platform, as well.
It's a memory hog, though. So you need one heck of a
computer/memory
to run 10 to 12 router instances. You need several hours of
your own
time to get things working kind of properly. So by the time
you
invest all that money, how close will you be to the purchase
of
real equipment?
It's a tradeoff, no doubt. Yes, it's an alternative. If
you're
running Windows, I'd suggest using Dynagen with it to help
manage
the instances. But beyond that, I simply didn't mention it
because
I had no (and still don't have any) official legal opinion
from Cisco.
Hope that helps,
-- Scott
