Hi,
winprinters are like winmodems, ie they are only half of what they
claim to be.
It's not case of USB or otherwise but that most modern printers cant
print and most are USB. No need to search out antiquated stuff like
dot matrix.
I suggest you look at Epson. Their printers are still real printers
and to that extent often better for linux or macOS printing. Anything
claiming to support EscP codes should work even on old linux systems
like the std TS 2.4 releases since that is the protocol that dates
back to dot matrix times. AFAIK Epson are the only ones to still
support this.
TurboPrint is collection of commercial linux printer drivers but very
fair price apx 50 euros and will support a very wide range of all
marques of printer so may handle what you have already but I dont
know if it works with 2.4 kernel. Check it out.

Well, dot-matrix is still the only character-at-a-time printer out
there. Good for environments where power is unstable, or where
physical environment is extremely harsh. With a page-at-a-time
printer like an inkjet or laser you lose the last page if you lose
power or suffer a crash. Really bad if you're logging critical items
like machine control.
