well. i know this is going to sound unreal, but i still have a very
old pc that is the only one i use.
its dial up, windows 98 5.6
Im probably the only person on this planet that still has it...we
will get a new pc eventually but right now are not in a financial
situation to, so for now this one will ahve to do...
I think i got something on it (spyware or viruses) that shouldnt be
there...i saw some unusual items i dont think were there before on
the c drive
such as winhelp.exe wenhelp32.exe wjview.exe, uninst.exe uninst16.exe
unvise32.qt upwuzun.exe
i use to use
www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.exe but that doesnt seem to work any more
neiter does adaware or spybot...
does anyone know of any other kind of legit free website that
removes viruses, spyware and stuff like that? otherwise, does
anyone know how i can remove these by going into the registry edit? I
dont want to go in there unless i know what im doing..
thanks so much! Jyll

Hey, no need to upgrade as long as the pc you've got does what you need
it to do. I know several people still on dial-up with Win98.
Here's a good site to lookup startup entries you mentioned:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Here's what I found for the ones you mentioned:
winhelp.exe - do a system search for this file. If it appears anywhere
'but' C:Windows, then it is likely a worm.
wenhelp32.exe - can't find a thing on this one. Are you sure you
spelled it correctly?
wjview.exe - this one is probably ok. It's a MS utility to view Java
files from a command line.
uninst.exe - this one might be ok too. Sometimes it appears in AV apps
as a false positive.
uninst16.exe - this could be a legit Win98 system file.
unvise32.qt - this is just one of many Quicktime files.
upwuzun.exe - couldn't find anything on this - is it spelled correctly?
So maybe you aren't too infected yet. What are the symptoms? Have you
looked at the Startup tab to see what items are checked? Start/Run,
type Msconfig, then click the Startup tab. Look up all the checked
entries at the website mentioned above.
Good luck,
Donk

This is where you can get AVG for free. As to the files you are
unsure of, I would suggest going to google and doing a search for
each one.

If the truth be known there are probably lots of foks who use old PCs and
dial up and often by choice. Having the latest and greatest is not a
necessity except on rare occasion, like for someone who is in business.

I would literally be willing to bet that you are NOT. 98 was a good version.
The only real drawback is that MS has now withdrawn support for it. And the
only support that they provide that is worth caring about is updates. This
does mean that security may not be as good as you need. Just use an
Anti-virus program. Dial up has some security advantage over always on since
the window of opportunity for malware is smaller.

I have it on my XP too, it's a legit program.
wenhelp32.exe
I assume that this is a typo and is really winhelp32.exe. I didn't find that
one. or the others.

As in, they don't run or they don't find anything.
I think that the general view re. spyware is that while thay may be able to
stop it in some cases or find it after it's on your comuter, they are
generally helpless to get rid of it after the fact.
My own view when computer problems seem to be mounting up is to re-install
everything. If your machine came with rescue disks, mine did way back with a
Sony PII, the you can run the disk and it will reinstall the OS and the
bundled software. It won't reinstall programs that you have installed
yourself, but if you have the install disks you can reinstall them. The one
tricky thing is your data files. What I do is partition my hard drive so
that I have a separate partition for data., but unless you have Partition
Magic or some other partitioner, you will first have to save your data to
some external media like a burnable CD drive or DVD drive. These or an
external hard drive are a computer users best friend.
I you don't have rescue disks but do have the install disks for the programs
that you want to reinstall you can just reinstall the OS, assuming that you
DO have the install disk. Another thought is to look on Ebay for a used copy
of XP, but keep on mind that it could be un-activatgable.
If any of this makes sense and you want to try it just write back and I will
help if I can.

When I was running Windows 98, I would reformat and reinstall about every 6 months to keep it running well. You might want to do that if the system has slowed down and you can't find a cause.

It did take me some time to develop my strategy, I started with Partition
Magic so that I can change partitions without destroying data. Next I got
Ghost which will clone a whole partition, if your computer get messed up,
viruses, spy. bad installs.
