Elementary question about Firefox

I have a xp home additions 2002, once I download Firefox what do I do
with Internet Explorer do I simply change the default, can I go back
and forth between the two, I like to know how difficult the process is
before I download Firefox. And also why change to Firefox is it that
much better. help me please

They will both work indecently but go into IE and Tools/Options/Programs tab to change to the default for either one.
