Having a pop up telling me I have low virtual memory and windows is making some space for all your programs to work, or something like that. Does it mean my hard drive is full or I need more memory? Is there someplace on the computer that could tell me of the unused programs I could delete? Thanks for any help
John

Well first click on My Computer and right click on the C: drive and choose Properties. This will show you your free space.

While there hit the Disk Cleanup button and get rid of stuff you don't need.

Then go to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and look at the list of programs and delete what you do not want or use.

Then go Control Panel again and System and the Advance tab. Click the settings button in the Performance section and reset the virtual memory to a higher figure.

Virtual memory is refering to the page file on your OS, this can be increased manually by right clicking on My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Page file settings or something like that. I am running vista myself so i am not 100% sure on the exact location, but i do know it is in that properties pannel somewhere.

As for virtual memory, it is not nessicarally needed to run your computer, but it does speed things up that little bit more. If you have some spare HDD space then increasing the page file will to the trick for you.

generally speaking, virtual memory is where your systems uses part of
your harddrive for ram when you do not have enough. The best way to
deal with virtual memory errors is to add more ram.

You can do temporary fixes by increasing the amount of virtual memory
up to 1.5 times the amount of physical ram you have. Personally I
leave my setting to let the computer decide.

If your harddrive is full and you do not have much ram, sometimes by
making more space on the drive can help. As I said, though creating
more space will help, adding more ram is really the best option.
