We have 11 Symbol AP-4131 access points on our wireless
network and need
to install another AP. One use of the wireless network is
for scanning
parts and product with LXE computer/scanners. It's been
suggested that we
install a CISCO access point because all the new LXE
computer/scanners now
have CISCO radio cards. (The LXE's used to have Symbol
cards but Symbol
no longer sell them to LXE).
Will a CISCO access point play well with the other 11 Symbol
access
points?
Why do CISCO and SYMBOL access points cost about $500 when a
Linksys AP
seems to do the same thing for less than $100. What do we
get for the
extra $400.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I've heard that Cisco has some proprietary encoding. Not
100% sure
about it though.
If not, then the two radios should play together as long as
they are
talking the same dialect (802.11b, g, or a).

I have a LinkSys at home, and I have problems with the
inexpensive thing.
It does not let a VPN go through the firewall part of it.
It also does not
like when the ISP changes the DSL IP address. It freezes
up, then has to be
rebooted.
I would assume that the CISCO is a little more reliable than
that.

LinkSys is a Cisco product. I use a DSL provider named
Speakeasy. I have
not had any trouble with them in 14 months of service. Of
course, I've got
a static IP address.

I have a number of linksys devices and have never
encountered problems
like that.
What model linksys are you talking about?

I have a Wireless A+G model WRT55AG. It has been a thorn in
my side for a
while, but I have not had time to contact their tech
support.
