ttree bus error after perl upgrade

After upgrading from Perl 5.6.1 to 5.8.7, (on FreeBSD
5.3-RELEASE), and 
rebuilding TT version 2.14, ttree is giving a bus error and
core dumping 
with some templates that we had no problems with before.  It
seems like 
it might be related to variable length when processing a
block - at 
least if I cut the variable length down enough, then ttree
will run it 
ok.  For example, I have a variable that is assigned 65
lines of text, 
and if I delete enough lines, it doesn't matter which lines,
and it's 
not always the same number of lines, then ttree will build
the template 
instead of giving the bus error.

Has anybody else seen and worked through this?
