in the position of X and Y, is white space mandatory?
It is there is all examples I have seen.

See the XML spec - http://www.w3.
org/TR/xml/#sec-comments - which
basically says that any "normal" character except
'-' may go at positions
X and Y (i.e. white space is not required).
